Drywall is durable, but it can be dented and cracked under the right circumstances. Someone might fall against the wall or shove heavy furniture against it and create a big or small hole that makes your wall look ugly.

Sometimes, an electrician, plumber, or pest control professional has to cut a hole in your drywall to work between your walls. No matter what caused the damage, the hole has to be patched so the drywall looks smooth and normal again. Here's how drywall repair can be done.

Cut A Patch From A New Piece Of Drywall

Drywall comes in large sheets, but you can also buy small squares of drywall to use as patches. The drywall repair service chooses the right size for the patch. A large piece of drywall can be cut down to size if needed.

The patch should be large enough to cover the entire damaged area on the old drywall. The patch should even be a little larger to make sure it can be attached to solid drywall rather than a damaged area that is crumbling.

The contractor might also want to cut the drywall patch so it's large enough to nail to the existing studs. However, that's not necessary, especially if the hole being patched is small.

Cut Out The Damaged Drywall

Next, the damaged area of the drywall is cut out to make room for the patch. Drywall is fairly easy to cut out, so the damaged area can be removed without having to take down the entire piece of drywall.

Once the damaged area is taken out, the borders need to be sanded so they are smooth. This makes it easier to fit the patch. Plus, the contractor needs to make straight lines when cutting so the patch fits right into place.

Seal The Patch In Place

The patch has to be nailed to existing studs if possible. If there are no studs, the contractor can nail a new one in the hole or add furring strips inside the hole. The new stud or strips give the contractor a way to secure the patch to the wall.

When the patch is nailed in place, the contractor uses drywall tape to cover the edges of the patch so it will be invisible. The tape goes around the edges of the patch and then it's covered with joint compound.

The joint compound is smoothed out as much as possible to keep the drywall smooth and level. However, it might still be necessary to sand the surface after the compound is dry so the patch won't show through once the wall is painted.

The final step in drywall repair is to paint the wall to cover up the work area. Once the wall is painted, the patch will be invisible and your wall will look good as new.
